Pine Rivers Dog Training Club

The Scent Work for Dogs group is part of the Pine Rivers Dog Training Club Inc which was established in 1992.

At Old Petrie Town, the Club’s trainers volunteer their time to help our members train their dogs to detect essential oils (Birch, Anise, Clove and Cypress) and then communicate to their handlers when they have found it. The training program for companion dogs is based on the real-life work of detection dogs. There are different elements or settings in which a dog is required to search. These are containers (cardboard boxes, luggage, plastic shoe boxes or similar), interiors, exteriors and vehicle searches.

One of the many benefits of scent work is that dogs of any breed, age, or training level can learn and enjoy this activity and it can also be amazing therapy for dogs with ‘special needs’, be it behavioural issues or dogs with reduced mobility due to age or injury.

Scent Work is one of the fastest growing dog sports in the world but it is not all about competition. The fun is in the training and watching our dogs demonstrate to us their amazing sense of smell.
